In most public schools, students have to try out to make sports teams. Here at Saint John School, many teams have too many players and might benefit with try-outs or even a second team. Teams may have many more than enough players, which can end up in players not getting as much playing time as they wanted. For teams that have enough players for a second team, the players only get to play for about ten minutes. This results in players getting upset or feeling bad that they aren’t playing.
In Mrs. Jenae Smith’s eighth grade class, everyone wanted to have try-outs for sports. One of the eighth graders, Lauren Kubczak, said ” I think students should try out because people get on the teams and then not the best people get on the team.”
On the other hand, another eighth grader, Alani Hendriks, doesn’t want try-outs.
“I feel like people who want to play, it will degrade them if they don’t make it,” she explained.
Even though some Saint John students want this change to happen, the vice principal, Mrs. Jill Burke, doesn’t see this as a possibility.
“The philosophy of the Parochial League is to be instructional, so that’s probably why we won’t have it,” she said.
The athletic director, Ms. Nichelle Allen, also doesn’t think the school should have try-outs for sports.
“The main focus is teamwork and bonding with your classmates, and community and sportsmanship,” she explained.
