The month of September is Hunger Awareness Month. Almost 500,000 San Diegans worry about getting food on the table. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, in 2015 42.2 million people in America faced hunger, and 13.1 million of those people were children.

Food insecurity is a problem for any individual, but is particularly harmful to children. It is shown that children who are food-deprived have trouble bonding with children their age and typically do worse on standardized tests than average children do. Malnourished children also are also at greater risk for cognitive, brain, and physiological damage that can be irreversible if not corrected.

Principal Dan Schuch stated when asked if Saint John School planned to do anything about Hunger Awareness Month, “Now that I am aware, I believe it would be a good thing for FIA to do this month.”

On September 30, Saint John School will be hosting the Saint Vincent de Paul Walk for the Poor. Although this is not dedicated to Hunger Awareness Month, lots of the proceeds will be going to people who cannot afford money for food. There will also be petitions that people can sign which will benefit people who cannot afford food.

“I did not know it was Hunger Awareness Month, and I think it is sad that 500,000 people in San Diego worry about food,” said seventh grader Michael Krummenacher.
