If you ever wanted to make a cupcake for the Fourth of July, then this is the article for you. Here is how to make cupcakes in red and blue with white frosting.

Ingredients to make the frosting using powdered sugar

3 cups powdered sugar

1/3 cup softened butter or margarine

1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract

1-2 tablespoons milk

Steps to make the frosting

In a bowl, mix the powdered sugar and butter with a spoon or an electric mixer. Make sure to mix on low speed if you use the electric mixer. Then, stir in the vanilla and one tablespoon of milk.

Gradually mix in just enough remaining milk to make the frosting smooth. If the frosting is too thick, then mix in more milk. If you do put in more milk, make sure to only do a few drops at a time. If the frosting becomes too thin, then beat in a small amount of powdered sugar. (This frosting size frosts a 13×9 inch cake perfectly, and frosts an 8- or 9- inch two-layer cake).

Ingredients to make the cupcakes

2 cups flour

½ teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons baking powder

½ cup softened butter

¾ cup sugar (if you like your cupcakes even sweeter, add a little more sugar)

2 eggs

1 cup milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

a few drops of red food dye

large bowl

large spoon for pouring the batch into the cupcake pan

(This is to make one batch of cupcakes that are red. To make the other batch of cupcakes, use the same recipe but use a few drops of blue food dye instead of red food dye)

Make the cake batter but before you cook the batter, dye it with a few drops of either blue dye or red dye.

How to make the cupcakes

Gather the cupcake ingredients and preheat oven to 325°F. In the large bowl, add in all dry ingredients. Then using one-quart sauce pan, heat one cup of butter and water. Remove the saucepan from heat and pour into the dry ingredient mixture. Mix well and then distribute batter into cupcake liners. Then place in oven when ready and bake for 20-25 minutes. Next, gather your ingredients for the frosting.
