Fourteen Saint John middle school students competed at Saint Augustine High School for the 2018-2019 Academic Decathlon on March 2. Eighth-grade teacher Mrs. Jenae Smith led the Decathlon team, a role she has held for 11 years.

Each student was assigned to a category which consisted of Religion, Math, English, Social Studies, Science, Current events, Literature, and Fine Arts. Twenty-four other Catholic schools from the diocese attended 

The team from Saint John School consisted of Karlie Amicay, Leila Barjestah, Ethan Chesney, Alex Eiguren, Megan Hallinan, Madison Howard, Michael Krummenacher, Amberlynn Lopardo Andrew Putnam, Braydon Sullivan, Brendan Cordaro, Shane Garcia, Evan Humphrey, and Lauren Nguyen. 

Mrs. Smith said, “the best part about the super quiz was that we knew one of the answers from a joke on the board and it was really fun.” 

Megan Hallinan from Mrs. Smith’s eighth grade class said, “I loved the competitiveness and becoming closer with everyone was a plus. I loved the moments when I felt smart and was answering the questions correctly.” 

Karlie Amicay from Mrs. Amy Jones’ eighth-grade class said, “My favorite part about academic decathlon was becoming closer with the team.” 

 Team members won awards in several categories. Alex Eiguren  placed second in Math, Andrew Putnam placed second in English, Madison Howard placed third in Writing, and Leila Barjestah placed fifth in Social Studies.
