The Saint John boys basketball team, which finished the Catholic League season with a 5-2 record,  headed into its last three games with an undefeated record, only to lose two of the last three.

The team was defeated in its fifth game by St. Patrick’s, 61-42. Nick Felago and Conor Buechs scored their first points of the season. Nick scored a free throw and Conor hit a three pointer. The team was missing two of its star players, 6’5” MJ Sweeney and seventh-grader Max Colucci. Braydon Sullivan injured his knee going up for a rebound. When coming down he was kneed in the inside of his knee.

Saint John demolished St. Joseph’s in the sixth game with a lopsided victory, 64-16. The team dominated in offense and defense. Everyone on the team scored including Cameron Velcheck. Cameron scored his first points of the season. Alex Colucci, fifth-grade brother of players John Paul Colucci and Max Colucci, also played in the game. Alex scored 5 points including a 3 pointer. The star players of the game were MJ Sweeney and Cary Kordas. MJ scored 16 points, had 20 rebounds, and had 2 blocks. Cary Kordas had 14 points, 17 rebounds, and 1 block.

The last game was against Saint Michaels Black. It was probably the most entertaining game of their season. The team  didn’t have Thomas Fleming or Cary Kordas for the game. The teams were going back and forth on the lead throughout the game. Eventually, they tied 47-47. They then went to overtime and Saint John’s lost 52-51.  MJ Sweeney was the star player for Saint Johns. MJ scored 13 points, 22 rebounds, and 3 blocks.
